BOOK MACHINE (Houston) @ Texas Contemporary

OVERVIEW

Blaffer Art Museum presents BOOK MACHINE (HOUSTON) powered by onestar press. This public art book making event takes place at Texas Contemporary at the George R. Brown Convention Center, September 4-7, 2014.

BOOK MACHINE is an ongoing initiative by co-founders Christophe Boutin and Melanie Scarciglia of onestar press based in Paris, France, that connects emerging designers and artist through the creation of custom-made artists’ books. Inaugurated in 2013 at the Centre Pompidou, it is a community-based participatory project that offers a unique opportunity for local artists and designers to conceive and realize books free of charge with one of the most distinguished art presses in the world. It is both an artistic and a learning experience that is open to the public and allows visitors to witness the creative process and learn about artistic book making through presentations and conversations.

For BOOK MACHINE (HOUSTON), 20 graphic communication seniors from the University of Houston will be on site during a 2.5-day period to work with artist from the Houston community to realize their vision for an artist’s book under the guidance of onestar press. Houston artists can sign-up for participation through an online portal on the websites of Texas Contemporary and Blaffer Art Museum on a first-come first-serve basis. They will have 3.5 hours to work with a designer to realize a book with materials provided for the occasion. At the end of each production day, books will be sent to an on-demand printer and printed and delivered the next day. The event will culminate in the presentation and discussion of the 100 new titles produced over the 2.5-day period on Sunday, September 7, 4-5pm with a reception to follow. As part of the official BOOK MACHINE edition of onestar press, the titles produced in Houston will be made available worldwide.

BOOK MACHINE (Houston) is an event dedicated to the process of book production in the grandest sense. In essence, the commitment of the artist to the realization of their book or catalog is an extension of their body of work, and this results in the creation of what we call the artist’s book.

At the heart of this engagement from the depths of the George R Brown Convention Center, there will be an atelier and office of book production open to the public. Visitors will witness a daily array of visual artists, writers and designers creating their books.

Around this production, there will also be a live feed projection of the printing process and visitors can attend various events, lectures, discussions, screenings and performances connected with the concept of the artist’s book.
