FREE Gallery Talk on Wednesday, September 13 at 12:00 p.m. in the Blaffer Art Museum galleries.

Get more out of the popular exhibition The Propeller Group with a free gallery talk by Robert Buzzanco, Professor in the Department of History at the University of Houston. Find a new understanding about subjects explored in the work of the art collective, particularly about their approach to the Vietnam-American war. Bring your own lunch—after the talk we invite you to keep the conversations going at Blaffer’s cafe.

About the exhibition

The Propeller Group brings together for the very first time seven projects comprised of videos and an assortment of related objects completed since 2010. Blurring the boundaries between an art collective and a global advertising agency, The Propeller Group was established by Phunam Thuc Ha, Matt Lucero, and Tuan Andrew Nguyen in 2006 as a multimedia platform for creating large-scale art projects. Their projects are deeply rooted in Vietnam’s history, politics, and everyday life, and yet extend to address global phenomena, including international commerce, globalized street culture, and the tools of war.

The exhibition is the first U.S. presentation by The Propeller Group and is organized by Blaffer Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and Phoenix Art Museum.

About the speaker

Robert Buzzanco is a scholar of the Vietnam War era and has written and edited several books and articles on that and various aspects of American history, including “Masters of War: Military Dissent in the Vietnam Ear,” and “Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life.” He has been a frequent guest on media in Houston and elsewhere, including radio and television news shows throughout the United States and Europe. He has been a professor in the history department at the University of Houston since 1995 and will be a visiting professor at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in Spring, 2018.
