In this workshop, participants will create a miniaturized floor mat out of rice bag and yarn. The artist, Anthony Pabillano (he/him/siya), engages in this craft as part of his ongoing personal journey to reconnect back to his childhood. Though this craft is not exclusive to his native country, he was first exposed to this particular floor mat-making method in the Philippines as he witnessed an elder sister source materials and make such a mat using cut plastic strips for a class assignment. Constructing this floor mat requires woven rice bags whose warps and wefts are accessible (i.e., not sealed away) and materials such as yarn or strips of fabric or plastic that are tied using a lark’s head knot. The material to be knotted are inserted into the gaps between the rice bag’s warps and wefts using a small crochet hook. Participants will be provided with a 5 inch x 7 inch panel of a rice bag, a Size 5 (1.9 millimeter) crochet hook, and access to the artist’s yarn collection to choose the colors of yarn they want to implement for their designs. Anthony’s first rice bag floor mat is a work in progress inspired by a personal connection to the concept of home (Tagalog word, “Bahay”). In reference to Cian Dayrit’s “Liberties were Taken” exhibition on display at the Blaffer Art Museum that explores agrarian reform, participants could hopefully situate this workshop’s activity centered around the home against the broader backdrop of societal struggles surrounding ownership and stewardship of land.
