La Gran Esperanza by Nathan Felix
La Gran Esperanza is a short, immersive opera presented at the Blaffer Art Museum. Centered on finding hope and determination in the face of adversity, the work follows three Hispanic childhood friends whose lives are shaped by the support and success that grows from unwavering resolve and one boy’s dreams of baseball. Through this exclusive performance, Felix tells a story loosely inspired by former MLB player, Freddie Benavidez, who inspired and gave hope to a generation of Hispanic youth searching for belonging and cultural identity in the border town of Laredo Texas. Benavides is widely regarded as the first professional athlete from Laredo.
La Gran Esperanza is composed by Nathan Felix and conducted by Jilin Dong and features performers from the University of Houston student alongside professional musicians from the greater Houston community. Please be aware that this is an interactive performance with no seating. Attendees will move with the performers throughout the museum, which includes stairs leading to the second level. An accessibility survey will be provided with ticket confirmation.
In the event of a sold-out performance, any unclaimed tickets will be released to walkups on a first come, first served basis. Please arrive fifteen minutes early if you are seeking admission without a ticket
