Makeshifting Lines led by Anisah Khan is a poetry workshop that welcomes everyone who has a love for poetry and art, regardless of experience. Drawing inspiration from the work on view and the prompts featured in the exhibition brochure, we will craft the beginnings of a poem. The goal is to leave with a makeshift of lines—rather than a finished poem—that communicates your emotional state through inspiration into beautiful lines of poetry. After all, writing a poem takes deep reflection and time. After viewing the exhibit and writing our rough drafts, we will meet as a group and share ideas on how to enhance our lines, build our visions up to a poem, and learn craft techniques.
Anisah Khan is a UH senior majoring in English, with a minor in psychology. She is a published writer, researcher, and aspiring Counseling Psychologist for youth with disabilities. Her essay, “Narrating the Spectrum,” was recognized as the 2023 Non-Fiction winner in the Alexandra L. Rowan Memorial Foundation Writing Competition. In addition to her creative pursuits, Khan, as a PURS scholar and FrameWorks Fellow, has researched the significance of partition literature for contemporary South Asian communities and continues her research in Special Education. In her free time, Anisah creates acrylic paintings of landscapes she pictures in her mind.
