Event Description
Robert Wilson, one of the world’s foremost experimental theater designers and visual artists, is coming to the University of Houston’s Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts this spring as a Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts visiting artist.
Wilson will visit students in the Moores School of Music and School of Theatre and Dance as well as present a public lecture on campus. He will speak about his work from the ‘60’s to today in lecture titled “Two Street” on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre, preceded by a reception in the Wortham Lobby at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to public.
The visiting artist program brings renowned artists from around the world to the University and provides diverse programming opportunities for the artists to engage with students, faculty and the public.Wilson is described by The New York Times as “a towering figure in the world of experimental theatre.” His influential body of work employs a diverse range of media including dance, movement, lighting, sculpture, music and text.
In the mid-1960s, he founded the Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds in New York City where he directed his first major productions, “The King of Spain” and “The Life and Times of Sigmund Freud.” In 1976, Wilson collaborated with composer Philip Glass to write and direct the landmark opera, “Einstein on the Beach.”
Wilson’s reputation for highly acclaimed theatrical products is rooted in his fine art practice. His drawings, paintings and sculptures are frequently presented internationally in both solo and group showings. Major exhibitions include the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (1991); the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1991); and the Instituto de Valencia de Arte Moderno (1992). He is the recipient of two Rockefeller and two Guggenheim fellowships. He is also the recipient of eight honorary doctorate degrees.
